Minutes for IDNAbis session 1 2009-03-23 San Francisco, CA, USA Prepared by Andrew Sullivan Chair opened the meeting, appointed a scribe, and asked for agenda changes. There were none. The Chair put up his slides, and stated by outlining plans for the meeting. The plan: to assess distance from the original charter goals given the existing documents, to consider the transition implications, and to consider an alternative proposal from Paul Hoffman. The Chair outlined the design goals. There was some discussion at the mic about the history of the reasoning behind the restriction of keeping ASCII. The Chair outlined the conditions under which re-chartering is necessary. The Chair outlined some basic elements of IDNA2003 and IDNA2008. There was some discussion about the details of the Esszett. There was some discussion about UNASSIGNED and whether that can be abusive or otherwise dangerous. The Chair outlined some of the implications of adopting IDNA2008 as currently written. Some other details of some of the examples in the slides turn out not to be exactly right, but the substantive effect is no different. There was considerable discussion of details. The Chair turned the discussion over to CJK local mapping under IDNA2008. There was some discussion about how the local mapping might work and what the effects will be. Some discussion of alternatives, as well, including one suggestion to add standard mapping to the lookup side and not to the registration side. The Chair closed the session, reminding people to reconvene the next day.
