Question: How is this different from existing service provider models where
transmission and peering are provided by third-parties?
Answer: It is similar.

Joe Touch: X-Bone Overlay presentation
The X-bone network architecture was presented.

Geysers Project
1)	architecture and tools for leveraging IT and network logical
resources into virtual networks
2)	use of external control planes (PCE/ASON/GMPLS) to create
virtualized topologies geared to cloud/

Related work is being done in:
OGF : NSI ( Network Service Intergace), OCCI (Open  Cloud Computing
Interface), and NMP as well as ITU

Aaron Falk: GENI project
Uses virtualization to create a deeply-programmable research test bed in a
federated set of networks. Currently building a meso-scale prototype
network.
An important consideration is stiching, or connecting sliver of resources
across multiple networks.
