2.3.19 IP Path Tracing (ippt) Bof

Current Meeting Report

The BOF was pretty simple. We talked about the hashing scheme. We talked about the protocols required to support traceback using schemes such as the hashing scheme. We discussed intellectual property issues. Glenn Keeni presented a somewhat different hash based tracing scheme his company is experimenting with.

The BOF then discussed whether the protocols to trace should be something designed by IETF. In the course of the discussion a couple of interesting points where made:

* First, there's already a developing need for a protocol to coordinate among tracing centers, to support existing tracing efforts.

* Second, there is probably an evolving need for a protocol that says "block these kinds of packets" and that if we're going to send out a message that queries for a particular offending packet, it is probably useful to include a mechanism to say "and block packets like it"

At the end of the discussion, the room overwhelmingly (nearly all hands in favor, none opposed) determined that it wished to see a WG to design the relevant protocols. Craig agreed to go to the OPS Area Directors and request a WG be created.

Craig also to set up an IPPT mailing list and to notify all attendees that the list exists.
