Description of Working Group:
Reflecting the needs of the Internet community, the IETF sees a need to create an guide for Internet users about mass unsolicited email and Netnews postings. The Working Group will develop an FYI RFC on mass unsolicited email and posts, as well as an FYI RFC on responsible advertising.

Progress:
This was the forth meeting of the revived RUN WG. The group met in a short (one hour) time slot. We accomplished all of the goals set forth in the Agenda for the meeting; specifically, we reviewed draft-ietf-run-spew-01.txt and the Responsible Adversiting draft.

I. Comments/additions for "Making Enemies Fast"
· Golden Rule - What would happen if everybody did what they wanted?
· Know your audience.
· Know the legality of collecting data; tell people what your collecting and what you plan to do with it.
· People have been successfully prosecuted/sued for header forging.
· www.bbb.org
· Add appendix on Ponzi Schemes.
· Don't send email through a third party.
· Beware of prepackaged advertising software/lists.
· If you're not sure it's bad, it probably is.
· Add cost model (postage due/cost shifting); take out old guard, use Internet culture.
· Ted will provide information on legality of spamming U.S. Government sites.
· Indicate where you got the list of addresses.
· Provide an opt-out for those who opted in; do not sell your list.
· Know the policy; some lists are receptive, some are merely tolerant; check the FAQ.
· Clarify Internet polution.
· Spell out "signature."
II. Comments/additions for "Don't Spew" Internet Draft
· Remove "yelling fire."
· Use "How would you feel ..." as example of spam.
· Add sample email header.
· Respond to spammer with an indication that you won't buy their stuff because of the spam.
· Abstract "provides explains."
· Fix typos.
